AI-generated profile on Instagram: what the label means
What the label means
The label says one thing: the person you see on this profile was generated with AI. It doesn't mean the account is a bot or a scam, and it doesn't mean every post is AI-generated. Someone runs the account and posts for the character; the label is how they tell you the face isn't a real human.
Instagram shows it on the profile and next to the account's content. A post that already carries its own AI label, for content made or edited with AI, doesn't get a second one. Instagram announced the change on its creators blog on August 31, 2026: the label was first tested earlier in 2026 as “AI creator”, and the new name is meant to make clear that the featured person is AI-generated.
Who needs it, and who doesn't
| Account | Profile label? |
|---|---|
| An account run as an AI-generated person: an AI influencer, an AI model, a virtual ambassador | Yes. Instagram asks these accounts to turn it on. |
| A creator who uses AI to edit photos, write captions or make graphics | No. Instagram says using AI tools in the creative process doesn't require it. |
| A brand or creator account that sometimes posts an AI character | Instagram's post doesn't cover this case directly. We label those posts as AI and keep the profile label for accounts run as the character. |
What happens if an AI account doesn't add it
Instagram says it detects accounts that feature an AI-generated person without the label and can limit them: the account and its content may stop appearing in recommendations, the places where Instagram shows content to people who don't follow you. RouteNote's report names those places as Reels, Explore and suggested content.
- Instagram notifies the accounts it flags.
- Account Status shows whether an account can appear in recommendations.
- If you think the decision is wrong, you appeal from Account Status. Instagram says its systems aren't perfect, which is why appeals exist.
- There are two ways back: add the label, or win the appeal.
Instagram hasn't published how much reach an unlabeled account loses. It has said the opposite case clearly: accounts that turn the label on themselves see no change in reach.
How to turn the label on
- Open your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Turn on the AI-generated profile toggle.
- If your account had the old “AI creator” label, you'll see the new name instead: confirm it if it still applies, or remove it if your profile no longer features an AI-generated person.
Instagram's post names the toggle without a longer menu path, and app versions differ. If you can't find it, check the Instagram Help Center.
AI-generated profile vs AI info
Instagram now has two AI labels, and they answer different questions:
| Label | AI-generated profile | AI info |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | The whole account | One post |
| Says | The person featured on this profile is AI-generated | This content was made or edited with AI |
| Who adds it | The account owner, from Edit profile | The person posting, and Meta when it detects industry-standard AI signals in the file |
| Since | August 31, 2026 (tested earlier in 2026 as “AI creator”) | 2024, under Meta's labeling policy |
Meta set out the post-level approach in its 2024 labeling policy: people disclose realistic AI-generated video and audio when they post, and Meta may also label content when it detects industry-standard AI signals.
How to tell if an account is AI-generated
- Look for the AI-generated profile label on the profile and next to its posts.
- Check single posts for the “AI info” label.
- Read the bio. Many AI accounts say it there.
- Unlabeled accounts are harder. Instagram is detecting them, but no check catches everything; a face that changes from post to post or details that don't hold up are hints, not proof.
How we label our AI character
The Klakix team made Mira, a realistic AI character, in November 2026 (how we made her, step by step). She appears in videos on our brand account, which isn't run as Mira, so we turn on the AI label on every post that features her. If Mira had her own account, it would carry the AI-generated profile label from the first post, and her bio would say she's AI. She is never shown as a real customer or reviewer.

Making an AI character the right way
If you're building an AI persona, the label is the last step, not the first. Start from a fictional person rather than someone's photo, keep the face consistent, and never present the character as a real customer. Our AI influencer guide covers the whole workflow, and the AI character generator makes fictional characters only: it has no photo upload.

Common questions
What does “AI-generated profile” mean on Instagram?
It means the person featured on that profile was generated with AI and isn't a real human. The account itself is run by a real person or company. Instagram shows the label on the profile and next to the account's posts, and introduced it under this name on August 31, 2026.
Is an account with the AI-generated profile label real or fake?
The person you see is not real; the account is. Someone runs it and posts for an AI-generated character, and the label is how they tell you so. A labeled account is being open about it, which is the opposite of a fake account pretending to be human.
What does “AI creator” on an Instagram profile mean?
It's the earlier name of the same label, tested in 2026. On August 31, 2026, Instagram renamed it “AI-generated profile” to make the meaning clearer. Accounts that had the old label see the new name and can confirm it or remove it.
How do I add the AI-generated profile label?
Go to your profile, tap Edit profile, and turn on the AI-generated profile toggle. Instagram asks accounts that feature an AI-generated person to add it, and says accounts that add it themselves see no change in reach.
How do I remove the AI-generated profile label?
If your profile doesn't feature an AI-generated person, turn the toggle off in Edit profile. If Instagram restricted your account because it thinks you are an unlabeled AI profile and that's wrong, appeal from Account Status; a successful appeal makes the account eligible for recommendations again.
Does the AI-generated profile label reduce reach?
Not according to Instagram: accounts that add the label proactively see no change in their reach. The accounts that can lose reach are the ones that feature an AI-generated person without the label; they can stop appearing in recommendations.
Do I need the label if I use AI to edit my photos?
No. Instagram says creators who use AI tools as part of their creative process, for edits, captions or graphics, don't need the profile label. It is for accounts whose featured person is AI-generated. Individual posts made or edited with AI can still carry the separate “AI info” label.
How can I tell if an Instagram account is AI-generated?
Look for the AI-generated profile label on the profile and next to its posts, the “AI info” label on single posts, and the bio, where many AI accounts say so. Unlabeled accounts are harder: a face that changes between posts or details that don't hold up are hints, not proof.
Make an AI character you can label with confidence
Design a fictional face from menus, keep it consistent across images and videos, and post it with the AI labels on.
